INEC: We will have more than 68 political parties before 2019 elections
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC says the commission might register more political parties as there are currently about 138 pending requests by associations to be registered as political parties. Hence the possibility of having more than 68 parties participating in the 2019 general elections.
Professor Mahmoud Yakubu, INEC boss at a stakeholders forum in Abuja yesterday also said some 300 or more foreigners have been arrested at various registration centres trying to obtain PVC’s. He however said the commission was working closely with the Nigerian Immigration Service NIS to curb the ugly trend.
While urging Nigerians on the need to obtain their PVC’s, Prof Mahmoud called on electorates and political parties to shun vote buying as it was working with relevant agencies to discourage the process.
“Vote buying is a big problem and we have been working with the EFCC and the police on this. We have to look at the administration of voting process by ensuring increased secrecy at the voting point,” he said.
