Nigerian Army says it has restored calm at Maiduguri Airport
The Nigerian Army yesterday said calm has returned to Maiduguri Airport after troops of the command went on a protest march against their redeployment, the protest according to the army officials lasted for about 2 hours.
The Deputy Director Public Relations, Operation Lafiya Dole Theatre Command Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu in a press statement yesterday said the skirmish happened when a few of the troops who had misunderstood the development and erroneously assumed it was going to negatively affect their rotation from the theatre of operation became agitated and reacted by firing into the air.
According to him, the redeployment became expedient after a recent assessment of the security situation by the Theatre Command.
“The Theatre Command undoubtedly considers this ugly incident quite regrettable and appropriate measures are being taken to forestall a recurrence”, he added.
