Oruk Anam 2019: Zoning Favors Rt. Hon. Udo Kierian Akpan
By Itoro Ime Noah
Let me begin this piece by commending the understanding of the aspirants from Oruk who have exhibited political maturity by formally consulting Rt. Hon. Udo Kierian Akpan on their aspirations despite the effort of few individuals to arrest such development. I also appreciate Rt. Hon. Udo Kierian Akpan for opening his door to welcome his Oruk brothers. I strongly believe the relationship established from such meetings will wax the unity, progress and development of the PDP in Oruk Anam in 2019 and beyond.
I feel compelled by some of my friends and acquaintances to address the question of ‘if Anam zone takes the State House of Assembly position in 2019, which zone will take the chairmanship position in 2020?’ First, let me bluntly declare that the question is inconsequential, it’s only exciting people who are not acquainted with the ideas of zoning; the last I checked, zoning implies, if this is here, that should be there.
The question therefore does not by any means dismiss the very fact that presently the chairmanship position is in Oruk and that the House of Assembly position should be in Anam. The year 2018 is for us to handle 2018 and by implication the 2019 questions as obtainable in other LGAs. When we get to 2020, we will cross the bridge and handle 2020 question. The supposed question only serves to create confusion since the questioner cannot convince the people.
The questioner and other proponents of the so-called ‘futurity’ need be reminded that if the Oruk people had since 2015 taken tenancy of the local government council without taking into consideration the arithmetic of 2019, they have no moral ground to draw advocates of zoning into considering the arithmetic of 2020 in the election of 2019. Again, probably am not too exposed to reality as understood or handled by other persons but in my little exposure have always known that the past shaped the future, have never heard of any logic where the unknown future is used to decide the present.
Precedents are taken from the past, never from the future. For anyone who is simple enough to tow the line of argument implied in the question, be informed and right now, it is 2019 that will decide 2020 and not 2020 deciding 2019. The logic of 2020 deciding 2019 equates to putting the cart before the horse, ebo ifiok mbok.
Again, am not also presently privy to any election guidelines/calendar scheduled to take place in 2020 and accordingly, I don’t understand which zoning they are even talking about in 2020. If there is any guideline, I will be very grateful if my attention is drawn to it. Furthermore, I recommend foreign research. Since Oruk Anam is not the first or the only local government area with the understanding that the House of Assembly and local government chairmanship position be zoned to different areas of the LGA, we can as well sponsor people to go and learn from other local government areas, it is not unconstitutional.
Brethren, I wish to also make this appeal, if anyone has a personal problem with Rt. Hon. Udo Kierian Akpan, he or she should try and sort it out or confront Udo Kierian Akpan in his or her own personal capacity. Do not try to use Oruk people to fight your selfish battle. This thing is zoned to Anam, if you are from Anam; it is not yet late to aspire against the house member. If you are from Oruk, it is also not too late to sponsor any of your cronies from Anam against Rt. Hon. Udo Kierian Akpan. The state house member has himself declared that if he is defeated in the field, he will concede.
For the truth seekers, take this to the bank, the supposed aspiration of Oruk is dead. No protest or inconsequential question can give life to it. Oruk is in charge of the local government council, Anam is in charge of the state house of Assembly. Anyone not satisfied with this position should brace up for the nomination, and the delegates will first speak in 2018 and then the people of Oruk Anam in 2019. 2020 is uninteresting and a distraction too dull to attract the attention of 2018/2019 actors.
Once again, I thank our Oruk aspirants for that bold step taken so far to relate with the International President of Ati-Annang and the leader of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, I mean the member representing Oruk Anam State constituency, Rt. Hon. Udo Kierian Akpan. It is the portion of right-thinking people to disappoint people who want to employ their personal differences with Rt. Hon. Udo Kierian Akpan to create disparity in the Oruk Anam PDP.
