… Promises to run an all-inclusive government

The song by Sir Wilker Jackson, “Like Play Like Play Udom Become Number One; Like Play Like Play Udom Become Super Star readily comes to mind with the recent declaration by INEC of the Winner of the 2019 House of Representatives election results. Mr. Unyime Idem has not only become number one but a political superstar having drowned incumbent and two term Member of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ukoette who was seeking a third term under the platform of the APC.
This may as well serve a retirement for Ukoette whose 8 year stay at the National Assembly has been one of mixed feelings. Mr. Idem did not only win the election convincingly but beat the incumbent in his ward and local government. Mr. Idem polled a total of 57,443 while the APC candidate got 17,199 winning with more than 40,000 votes. While he got 25,749 votes from Oruk Anam LGA, Mr. Idem garnered 31, 694 from his native Ukanafun LGA.
It is often said that when capacity and competence meets face to face with incompetence and failure, the latter bows. This is what actually played in the just concluded House of Representatives election for Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency as the people chose light over darkness, progress over backwardness, competence over clownish incompetence and selflessness over greed.
The people spoke overwhelmingly through the ballot having experienced disappointment, leadership failure, neglect and backwardness in the last 8 years. They chose a new dawn, a new beginning and voted for inspiration, development, empowerment and motivation. Those interviewed revealed that they voted for a leader who knows the way and is willing to show them the way to their future and a representative who will provide a shoulder for them to lean on when they need succour.
Recall that on the last day of electioneering, the people of Ward 8 Ukanafun, Mr. Idem’s Ward in a prophetic move presented a Bible and the sum of N500,000. They specifically said that the money was meant to cover for Mr. Idem’s flight ticket, accommodation and other expenses during his swearing in. Well that prophetic move of their has paid off as their illustrious son did not only win the election but has been declared and certified winner by INEC and will be sworn in by God’s special grace come June 2019.
From the look of things, there may be no litigation concerning the election of Mr. Idem because it has been adjudged as free, fair and credible. Also, shortly after the declaration of Mr. Idem as winner, the Party Agent for the APC candidate, Mr. Ubokobong Umoh was magnanimous enough to concede defeat on behalf of his candidate by hugging and congratulating Mr. Unyime Idem while onlookers gave shouting and clapping ovation. The Chapter Chairman of APC in Ukanafun who hails from the same Ward (8) with Mr. Idem displayed brotherhood by also congratulating and hugging the winner. It is expected that in the coming days, the incumbent, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ukoette in the interest of the Federal Constituency will make the call and congratulate Mr. Unyime Idem.
Reacting to his victory shortly after being declared winner of the election, the highly elated Mr Idem said that of a truth God rules in the affairs of men and give the kingdom to the chosen. He also said that since power comes from God, he is privileged to be the one chosen by God to represent the people of Ukanafun and Oruk Anam. He dedicated the victory to the people and promised not to take the mandate given him for granted. He said time has come for the people to put the past behind them and join hands with him to build the Federal constituency of their dream. He also thanked Rt. Hon Ukoette for putting up a good fight stating that in a contest one must emerge as winner. While promising to run an all-inclusive government, he called on the incumbent to accept his right hand of fellowship so together they can build a new Federal Constituency.
