AKSEPWMA reads riot act against indiscriminate waste disposal in Uyo

In a bid to ensure compliance with the law guiding waste management and disposal by residents of the state, the state Agency for Environmental Protection and Waste Management Board, led by Hon. Prince Ikim has warned residents to desist from dumping waste indiscriminately as defaulters, if caught, would face the wrath of the law.
The AKSEPWMA Boss handed down the warning yesterday, in a chat with journalists, during a routine inspection of waste evacuation exercise undertaken by the Agency.
Prince Ikim advised residents to always package their wastes in a politin bags and dump same only at government approved dump-points situated within the respective streets in the city, as this would not only help evacuators from their routine evacuation but will also prevent the spread of the waste from littering the environment. He also revealed that the time for dumping on daily basis is within 6pm to 6am, urging residents to work within the timeframe as dumping after the stimulated hours is a crime and would be treated as such if one is caught defaulting.
He warned those he described as scavengers to stop forthwith from scattering the wastes at dump-points in search of scraps but rather advised that such activity be done only at the dumpsite located along Uyo village road, to avoid being apprehended by Tax Force members.
Ikim decried the attitude of resource persons handing the evacuation of waste and maintenance of the roads across the state, saying that if they don’t get to work in line with the terms of their contracts, the Agency would not hesitate to terminate such contracts for only those responsive and responsible to their tasks.
He however charged them to step up their games as the agency would not tolerate lackadaisical attitude to work, henceforth.
Speaking on the planned recycling of Waste in the state, Prince Ikim divulged that state has made adequate plans for waste generated in the state to be recycled for something useful, citing the fact that the Agency has entered a Memoranda of Understanding, MoU with Chinese company called P&S Solutions, as well as Innoson Groups, amongst others, with intent to partner the state on Waste Recycling, expressing optimism that within a space of time, the Agency would finalize terms and conditionalities of the partnership which would see the state as one of the states with huge investment in Waste Recycling.
He assured residents of the state that the Agency is in for making the state retains its top rating as the Cleanest State in the Nation, even as he implored residents to put hands on deck to achieve more feats for the state.
Meanwhile, in a swift response to the responsibility of wastes evacuation in the state, the Agency has since dispatched an intervention team tasked with the responsibility to evacuate wastes within Uyo metropolis and its environs, to ensure a clean and safe Akwa Ibom State.
