Bursary Payment: Akwa Ibom State Government clear the air
By Emma Akpabio
The Akwa Ibom State government has mapped out new strategies for the payment of bursary to Students from the State. This was disclosed recently by the Hon. Commissioner for Education – Professor Victor Inoka, during a live interview on AKBC Television.
Inoka who stated that the sustainability of the free and compulsory Education was a proof of the State Government’s commitment towards the welfare of the Students, assured the Students that bursary would be paid soon.
Responding to some allegations by the President of National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS) – Comrd Danielson Akpan that Akwa Ibom state government under Mr Udom Emmanuel has neglected the welfare of the Students, the Education Boss who described such allegations as malicious, decried why the NANS president should allow himself to be used by desperate power seekers to discredit a focused Government. Inoka however, revealed that plans for bursary payment had been mapped out, as was disclosed by Gov Emmanuel recently, during an interactive session with the leadership of NAAKIS – the umbrella body of Akwa Ibom Students world wide.
Disclosing the new modalities for Bursary payment, Prof Inoka said “coming from the tertiary institution background, I know that often times, during bursary payment, the Student leaders include names of ghosts Students thereby depriving the genuine Students their entitlements. Because of such situations, once the necessary things have been fine tuned, a portal would be opened, and Akwa Ibom students would log on and provide the necessary information on the portal. Once the pieces of information provided are genuine, payment would be made to such Student”.
On other achievements of Governor Emmanuel in the education Sector, Prof Inoka stated that many Students from Primary to Tertiary institutions have benefited from the Scholarship Scheme of the State Government across the 31 Local government areas. Sighting Mbioto Technical college amongst others as an example, the Honourable Commissioner emphasised that most of the private Schools cannot compete favourably with the Government owned institutions in terms of infrastructures and Quality of teachers. Inoka stressed that public School teachers are trained regularly. He further disclosed that the State government pays WASSCE and NAPTED fees as well as subventions to different school heads, amongst other achievements of the State Government.
Meanwhile, in another live Television interview, the President and Speaker of NAAKIS described the allegation of the NANS president as unfounded. Comrds Aniefiok Edet and Aniedi Michael who spoke respectively, acknowledged that the State government under Mr Udom Emmanuel has always been supportive of the Students.
The NAAKIS leaders who condemned the press release of the NANS president, noted that the NANS president would have either contacted the ministry of Education or NAAKIS before such release. They called on peace loving Akwa Ibom students to remain calm, as Governor Udom Emmanuel’s led administration is intensifying strategies to pay bursaries as promised during the last international Students day celebration.
