Akwa Ibom 2019: Time to look at the phrase – ‘No man can play God’
By Abel Udoekene
I confess I shed tears of joy when the result of the Governorship and State House of Assembly election in Akwa Ibom state was announced. Along with many others, we raised the bar and sings songs of liberation and freedom.
For many who may not understand why we had to go that far, the build-up to the general election presented us with a big challenge that tested our faith in God, our strength as a people and our unity as a State.
As a State, we have never doubted the existence of God. As a people, the Ibibio, Annang and Oron have existed together in peace for many years, but those who wanted to factionalized us used our diversity as a campaign vehicle.
Liars Upon liars kept spreading propaganda and rumours with the aim of turning us against ourselves and trying to play God, for them, nobody can be anything or achieve anything in life without them.
Our diversity was tested, our culture was tested, our faith was tested. I had friends who collected huge sums of money just to demonized those that stood still on the side of truth, yet we overcome and become victorious.
On the day of the election, we were on our toes trying to defend our votes from enemies of democracy who had flooded the State with thugs. We saw armoured tanks reminding us of the power of Federal might, but God never let us down.
I only met Governor Udom Emmanuel once, that was in 2007, then I was the Publicity Secretary, Christian Youth Fellowship, Qua Iboe Church- Lagos Superintendency. Our meeting only lasted for about 5 minutes and till today I can never forget what he told me then.
“Abel, I am where I am today, because of God” So when his campaign was centred around God – ‘Only God’ I was not surprised. Because He is a man who loves God and has contributed immensely to mission work and the development of the Church.
Our Celebration will never end because God will always be God and Man will always be man. On a lighter note, we have seen how God raised someone who most people never gave the chance to win the Senatorial election in Akwa Ibom North West, defeating the incumbent senator in 8 out of 10 LGA in the Senatorial district, the victory we had long predicted on November 15, 2018 with an article written and published on Nigeria Today by Emma Akpabio.
This is our testimony, if you ever doubted the existence of God, hear this: there is God and he will never let us down.
God bless Akwa Ibom State
