Godswill Akpabio, Akwa Ibom people and politics
By Comrade Ewa Okpo Edmund
Sometime in November 2017 during the PDP campaign tour for Local Government elections we got into a discussion while driving to Ikot Abasi LGAs and somehow Akpabio became a topic for discussion and I remember telling those inside my car that if Akpabio’s lucky enough to go for second term he shouldn’t think of a third at the Senate and my sister then Mfonobong Usoro went berserk claiming the man was an institution, final Obong Owo and in fact a God! Forgive her political ignominy especially Akwa Ibom “turn by turn” politics.
In Akwa Ibom, no matter who you are and what you’ve done you must step aside for someone else when the time comes. And Akpabio wouldn’t be an exception, I told her. But she almost jumped out of my car. To help her with her suicidal fanatism I shocked her even more by telling her that infact if Akpabio leaves PDP today he wouldn’t win the second term election for senate. O’ Jesus! What a travesty! She dared me. Sincerely I didn’t know that Akpabio would defect then. None of us knew.
It wasn’t long after that uncle goddy started acting too funny for laughs. And before we knew it he was out of PDP into APC. He didn’t stop there. He insulted, taunted and blackmailed everybody in PDP for not clapping for him and following him to Buhari. And this is after he’d denied defecting when asked earlier.
Truth be told, maybe even Udom and his entire cabinet, house of assembly, PDP structure etc would have decamped with Godswil if he’d not walked out arrogantly away abandoning them to their fate. God.
Today, I’m like a prophet where Mfonobong is. It’s no clairvoyance as some may be wont to presume. I’ve paid my dues. I’ve learned the ropes. I know Akwa Ibom people and politics. I may not have become rich from my labour I’m content because it has always been more of passion to me than business as it is to some. Not once under Akpabio were some of us commended yet not once did our loyalty flinch. I’m just one our of hundreds of thousands. Do the trajectory yourself and imagine what uncommon adversary the uncommon coward was against.
At the rust of emphasis, you need to know the political psyche and culture of Akwa Ibom people to be successful in Akwa Ibom politics Akpabio doesn’t, Mon Amie Mfonobong doesn’t. Most of the people around Godswil today don’t. They weren’t the ones in the field for Goodwill in those days. This is their first election for him. This is the first election Godswil Akpabio is contesting himself by himself. All others were run by those he turned around and claimed he made forgetting that it was a qui pro quo paradigm where people worked for him and claimed their entitlements. The entitlements he now claims he was doing them a favour. The entitlements they actually scrambled to milk out of him. Unfortunately for him not all who worked for him benefitted.
So when he jumped ship forgetting he didn’t know how to swim his life guards just watched him drown to the viewing pleasure of his enemies to teach the rest of the world a lesson about characters like him.
A general without his lieutenants and soldiers to fight for him is a bloody civilian! Politics is more of structures than fanfare. I’ve seen very popular candidates lose elections because they didn’t have the structure or didn’t coordinate the structures properly. In Essien Udim on Saturday old women were hanging APC hand bags looking for “Ufuk-eyo” (Umbrella) to thumb print on.
One, they could t have learned to use their left hand in their old age. Two, the people they know and listen to for political direction in the past decade and more are umbrella people. Three, their favorite son had gone rogue and needed to be disciplined.
Akpabio, like Enekentioba, the proverbial bird who because he’d seen food to eat to his fill challenged his personal Chi to a wrestling bout. He had to be taught a lesson. And in traditional African society that is done by trashing. So for an uncommon squandrel is an uncommon trashing.
