Just in: INEC chairman bows to pressure, may redeploy Akwa Ibom REC within 48 hours
There are indications in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that the chairman of the commission, Prof Yakubu Mahmood has finally bow to pressure from President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to redeploy the Resident Electoral Commissioner of Akwa Ibom State, Mike Igini.
According to sources in the commission who spoke with Nigeria Today on condition of anonymity, President Muhammadu Buhari has given INEC chairman less than 48 hours to change the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Akwa Ibom or face his wrath.
The source noted that Mike Igini refusal to compromised with APC and rigged Akwa Ibom for Buhari was his number one sin.
“They have been clamouring for the commission to redeploy Igini to a State that will not have a Governorship election for the sake of the APC” the source noted
“One of the party stalwart who visited the commission last week suggested Bayelsa, or Edo. He told the chairman that he was appointed by Buhari and should listen to the demands of the APC”
The source alleged that the image of the Commission was at stake if the chairman allowed the APC to tampers with the Independent of the Commission
“Prof Mahmood is a courageous man. I don’t think he will fall into this cheap blackmail. APC does not want Igini because of his integrity, the chairman is very aware of this, if he now compromised, then Nigeria’s democracy will be in a great jeopardy”
