Free all political detainees, PDP tells Nigerian Police
The People Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State has urged the Nigerian Police to free all members of the PDP who they had arrested on the instigation of the All Progressives Congress before the Saturday 23rd Presidential and National Assembly election.
In a Press Statement signed by the State party publicity secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the PDP noted that they had notified the whole world of plans to harass, arrest and incarcerate high ranking members of the PDP and disclosed that hundreds of PDP supporters have been arrested and detained by the police without any trial.
The Statement reads:
Before the elections, we had notified the whole world of plans to harass, arrest and incarcerate high ranking members of the People’s Democratic Party in Akwa Ibom state, on the instigation of the All Progressives Congress.
As we had predicted, hundreds of our people were arrested and detained and till date are yet to be released. These arrests were made without lawful justification and for the most flimsy reasons, like wearing a PDP cap. Most of the detainees have been denied access to their family and friends.
With the first leg of elections over, it is pertinent to demand:
1. That all security agencies should immediately and unconditionally release all those who were arrested for political reasons.
2. Where there is any strand of evidence of wrongdoing against them, they should be prosecuted.
3. That all security agencies should act lawfully and within the bounds of the law.
