Akwa Ibom State Government set to provide dumpsters for waste collection

In a bid to maintain sanity and ensure proper waste disposal by residents and citizens, Akwa Ibom State Government has concluded plans to provide dumpsters at Government approved dump points within the State Capital territory, it’s environs and all other parts of the State.
The Chairman Akwa Ibom state environmental protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA) Hon Prince Akpan Ikim, made the disclosure on Thursday, during a live radio program (Update Akwa Ibom) on radio Akwa Ibom 90.5FM Uyo.
Reacting to indiscriminate dumping of refuse, Ikim stated that due to rural – urban migration and rapid population increase in Uyo, the volume of waste generated by residents of the State capital has increased and as such, the state Government is set to provide dumpsters, as smaller receptacles can no longer contain the volume of Waste generated.
“Plans have been concluded and dumpsters will be provided to replace the receptacles at government approved dump points. Let me also state here that we are starting our house to house waste evacuation program, and we are launching the pilot at Akwa Ima Estate. over 250 receptacles are ready for a start, and we will strategically position them for proper disposal of Waste.” Ikim Added.
Speaking about the cleanliness of other local government areas, the Waste management board Chairman who noted that the Agency also covers the entire 10 federal Constituencies in the State, restated that negotiations are ongoing with Council Chairmen for the approval of dump sites in all the 31 Local government areas for effective waste management and disposal. Hon Ikim while reiterating that it is the duty of all citizens to keep their environments clean and beautiful, vowed to apprehend and prosecute any defaulter according to Akwa Ibom State environmental protection and waste management Law, Cap 47, 2000.
On street Trading around Ibom plaza and Akpan Andem market, Ikim who decried on how traders block major roads, stated that the State government will not embark on a forceful eviction of traders from the street. He reassured that the Agency will diplomatically and peacefully evacuate traders from the streets where they cause unnecessary road blocks to government approved locations and sites.
The former Council Boss of Oruk Anam LGA who called on the general public to always report areas with accumulated waste to the Agency for immediate evacuation, reassurwd the Agency’s readiness to make Akwa Ibom remain the cleanest State in Nigeria.
