Akwa Ibom Speakership and the Perfection of choosing Rt Hon Udo Kierian Akpan
By Samuel Udo
Rt. Hon. UDO Kierian Akpan is a legislative five star general, a political aficionado and a grassroots field Marshall in the politics of Akwa Ibom State. He will be representing the good People of Oruk Anam for the third time. This is record breaking and a giant stride that doesn’t just happen.
Rt. Honourable Udo Kierian Akpan is a former labour leader and a comrade at heart. Against all odds, he won at the PDP primaries and at the March 9, general elections.
In the eight years of being in the House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. UDO Kierian Akpan has served the House as the deputy speaker and he is currently the leader of the house. He is one of the members with the highest number of sponsored bills. Beyond his excellent performance in the House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Kierian has impacted positively on the lives of his constituents. His empowerment schemes have been second to non in the history of his constituency. Rt. Hon. UDO Kierian Akpan has taken as priority, human capacity development, facilitated jobs and appointments for his constituents and empowered youth and woman to start sustainable businesses.
In the next Assembly, Rt. Hon. Udo Kierian Akpan will be the most ranking and experienced member of the house, as he will be the only member doing a third tenure. The next Assembly promises to be a very robust and dynamic one, hence the need to have a capacity-filled leadership. Rt. Hon. Udo Kierian’s might in piloting the affairs of the next Assembly cannot be overemphasized as history holds records of his immense contributions to the stability of the immediate past and the present Assemblies.
Significantly, owing to the sensitivity and demands of the speakership, many political pundits have made permutations and counter permutations on who should be the next speaker. Though the party ‘may’ decide to zone the office to a particular Senatorial District or a Federal constituency, it remains an exclusive right of the House to decide who steers the affairs of Assembly for the next four years.
If the party is to zone the office to a Federal Constituency, the Ukanafun/ Oruk Anam federal constituency should be the most favoured for zoning as it currently has no principal officer in party or in the state. Where this happens, Rt. Hon. Udo Kierian Akpan is the most favoured. It is also worthy to note that the present speaker and the state chairman of the party are from the same Federal constituency and the argument that the speaker and the deputy Governor shouldn’t come from the same senatorial district, hold no water.
My submission remains thus that on the grounds of credibility and competency, Rt. Hon. Udo Kierian Akpan representing Oruk Anam State Constituency, should be the next speaker.
